One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in my firearms journey is this: shooting is a perishable skill.
It’s something many of us hear, but few truly understand — until it hits close to home. For me, that lesson came in 2011, during a pistol qualification that I thought I had in the bag. I was wrong.
😓 When Confidence Meets Reality
I walked onto the range that day believing I could just “show up and shoot.” I didn’t practice. I didn’t prepare. I underestimated how quickly skills fade when you don’t train.
And I failed.
I can still remember the feeling of standing there — embarrassed, frustrated, and honestly, mad at myself. But deep down, I knew the reason: I hadn’t taken my training seriously. I expected my skills to be there when I needed them, even though I hadn’t put in the work to maintain them.
🔸 We All Learn Differently
My husband has this incredible natural ability to pick up a pistol and shoot with ease. He makes it look effortless. I, on the other hand, have to work for everything I do.
And you know what? That’s okay. Because it taught me the value of deliberate, consistent training.
🎯 Turning Failure Into Fuel
After failing, I didn’t make excuses. I accepted responsibility for my lack of preparation. And then I got to work. I took training courses, applied the techniques I learned, and practiced with intention.
A week later, I went back to the range. This time, I was focused, prepared, and determined — and I passed my qualification with a 6-point increase.
More importantly, I never failed another qualification again.
